Understanding Moles, Skin Tags, and Barnacles 

Moles and other skin lesions can develop for various reasons, ranging from genetic factors to sun exposure. Moles, also known as nevi, are generally benign; however, changes in size, shape, or color may indicate the need for medical attention. Unwanted lesions, such as skin tags and seborrheic keratoses (barnacles),  might also be troublesome.  

Excision of moles and other benign growths involves the safe and precise removal of the lesion, with a focus on minimizing scarring and preserving the skin’s structure and appearance. The excision is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring patient comfort throughout the procedure. Depending on the size, location, and type of the growth, the excision may involve different techniques to minimize scarring while ensuring the mole or lesion is entirely removed. 

What Techniques Are Used in Mole and Unwanted Lesion Excisions?

The approach depends on the size, location, and type of lesion. Dr. Hedayati uses a variety of techniques to address different needs:

• Surgical Excision: For moles or lesions that require complete removal, an incision is made around the growth. This technique ensures the lesion is fully excised, and the skin is then sutured for proper healing.
• Shave Excision: For lesions that are raised above the skin’s surface, such as certain moles or skin tags, a shave excision may be used. The lesion is “shaved off” at or just below the surface level.
• Punch Excision: Ideal for small, thick lesions, a punch excision uses a circular blade to remove the lesion in its entirety. This method allows for precise removal with minimal disruption to surrounding skin and typically requires only a small suture.
